In the Summer of 1965 he has submitted the manuscript of this work as his doctoral thesis to the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg. The work was dedicated to his parents. Four years later and only two years before his habilitation, the thesis was published in Berlin by Bruno Hessling as Münchner Ägyptologische Studien, 19, (Münchener Universitäts-Schriften, Philosophische Fakultät), edited by Hans Wolfgang Müller. Assmann is Emeritus Professor at the University of Heidelberg, Honorary Professor at the University of Konstanz, has held guest professorships at Yale, the University of Chicago, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, in Paris.
