Anstelle einer üblichen Festschrift wird Richard Ellis mit dieser Sammlung von Studien über Tempelgebäude geehrt. Der erste Teil des Buches untersucht die Vielfalt der Textzeugen in altorientalischen Kulturen: unter anderem sumerische, babylonische, assyrische, elamische, hethitische und achämenidische Texte. Der zweite Teil ist verschiedenen Stellen der hebräischen Bibel gewidmet, die sich mit dem Tempelbau beschäftigen: Themen sind unter anderem der Bau des ersten Tempels, die Nennung in den Chroniken, die Tempelreform in Hesekiel und die Anweisungen für den Bau der Gotteshauses in Exodus 25ff. Der Band wird durch eine umfangreiche Sammlung von Kurzbeschreibungen altorientalischer und biblisch-hebräischer Texte ergänzt, die sich mit Tempelgebäude beschäftigen.
