History
Similar to the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität (1919) in Münster, Ugarit-Verlag is a very young company, which was founded on July 13, 1988 by Prof. Dr. Manfried Dietrich and Prof. Dr. Oswald Loretz was founded as a company under civil law for the purpose of publishing scientific books. The series ALASP (M) = "Treatises on the literature of Old Syria-Palestine (and Mesopotamia)" made the start, with the series UBL = "Ugaritic-Biblical Literature" being added in 1988. In 1992 the series AVO = "Antiquity Studies of the Near East" was founded and after the death of Prof. Dr. Alfred Rupp took over the publications MARG = "Messages for Anthropology and Religious History" and FARG = "Research on Anthropology and Religious History", as well as the yearbook of the publisher "Homo et Religio", Saarbrücken. In 1997 the publishers removed the series AOAT = "Old Orient and Old Testament" and the yearbook UF = "Ugarit Research" from the publishers Butzon & Bercker, Kevelaer, and Neukirchener, Neukirchen-Vluyn, and integrated these publications into the range of the Ugarit publishing house. Due to the growing offer, it was necessary to hire a lecturer and other assistants.
In order to ensure a customer-oriented distribution of the publishing offer, the distribution was awarded to the company Sigloch Distribution, Blaufelden, Germany. Eisenbrauns Inc., Warsaw, IN, USA, was won over for improved marketing in the USA and Canada.
On July 2, 2012, almost exactly 24 years after the publishing house was founded, the Ugarit-Verlag GbR was founded by Prof. Dr. Thomas R. Kämmerer acquired and will now work together with Prof. Dr. Manfried Dietrich continued as Ugarit-Verlag - Buch- und Medienhandel GmbH.
