Similar to the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität (1919) in Münster, Ugarit-Verlag is a very young company, which was founded on July 13, 1988 by Prof. Dr. Manfried Dietrich and Prof. Dr. Oswald Loretz was founded as a company under civil law for the purpose of publishing scientific books. The series ALASP (M) = "Treatises on the literature of Old Syria-Palestine (and Mesopotamia)" made the start, with the series UBL = "Ugaritic-Biblical Literature" being added in 1988. In 1992 the series AVO = "Antiquity Studies of the Near East" was founded and after the death of Prof. Dr. Alfred Rupp took over the publications MARG = "Messages for Anthropology and Religious History" and FARG = "Research on Anthropology and Religious History", as well as the yearbook of the publisher "Homo et Religio", Saarbrücken.
